Getting kids comfortable about visits to your Geelong family dentist

June 15, 2015

A visit to the dentist can make some children anxious. Just the thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair can lead to serious anxiety for a grown up, so it’s not surprising that kids can suffer from the same issues.

If you are nervous about visiting the dentist, it is quite possible that you unconsciously pass on your fears to your children. Do you speak negatively about going to the dentist to or within earshot of your kids? Do you put off going to the dentist until you are suffering from dental pain? Remember that kids are brilliant at soaking up what happens and is said around them, so if you don’t want to pass on your nervousness about the dentist it’s best to start visits to your Geelong family dentist early on in your children’s lives.

At Dentistry of Excellence we encourage you to make an appointment with one of our dentists when your child’s first tooth erupts. This gives us the opportunity to get a good look at the child’s mouth before any dental work needs to be carried out. If your child’s first few visits to the dentist are just to have a look, they are much more likely to think of their Geelong family dentist as an enjoyable place to visit – certainly not scary and maybe even a little fun!

As they grow, it’s important to keep your regular six monthly appointments with your family dentist. This will ensure a visit to the dentist doesn’t always mean uncomfortable treatment. Most visits will just be a “look and see” for the dentist to keep a close eye on the health of your child’s developing mouth, teeth and gums. If spotted early enough, many problems can be averted with preventative care and treatment.

Your family dentist in Geelong at Dentistry of Excellence is committed to providing exceptional care and treatment for you and your whole family and we have the experience and care to make a visit to the dentist as comfortable as possible for everyone!
